The Star at the Center of our Solar System...

The Sun! Did you know that our sun is also a star? It’s a special star that’s the biggest object in our solar system, and it’s made of a hot ball of gasses—mainly hydrogen and helium—that gives off lots and lots of energy. All life on Earth depends on the light and heat that the sun provides!

Earth’s Natural Satellite...

The Moon! Our moon is a large natural object that travels around the Earth. It’s held in place by Earth’s powerful gravitational force, and it’s much closer to Earth than other planets. In fact, it’s so close that the moon’s gravity affects the water on Earth’s surface, creating tides in our oceans.

The Ringed Planet...

Saturn! Saturn is the second largest planet in the solar system, second only to the Gas Giant, Jupiter! It’s known as the Ringed Planet because of the beautiful rings that surround it—they’re mostly made from frozen chunks of ice and rocks. Hard to believe something so cold and big can be so beautiful, right?

Earth’s Beautiful Galaxy...

The Milky Way! A galaxy is made up of a bunch of stars all clustered together in space. Our solar system, made up of the Sun, the Earth, and all the planets, is a part of a huge galaxy called the Milky Way. It is so big that our Sun is just one of hundreds of billions of stars inside of it!

The Most Famous Wanderer of our Solar System...

Halley’s comet! A comet is a large ball of dust and ice that orbits the sun, and Halley’s comet is the most famous of them all. It’s only 9.3 miles wide and 5 miles long, but it creates a fantastic “tail” that’s visible from Earth! It orbits us every 75 years or so, and you can see it next time in July 2061.

The Apollo Missions

Ever wondered how mankind got to the moon? The answer is the Apollo missions, run by NASA. The first Apollo flight took off in 1968, and was all about testing the equipment and the rockets to make sure humans could safely land on the moon.

On July 20th, 1969, the three astronauts on Apollo 11 became the first people to land on the moon, and when Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the moon, he said “That’s one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.”

The International Space Station

The International Space Station (ISS) is a man-made spacecraft that circles around the Earth every 90 min—that means it’s currently travelling at a speed of 17,500 miles per hour!

The ISS is a collaborative project between many different countries, and is where astronauts and researchers live in space to learn more about space travel and the effects of living in space on the human body. Would you ever want to live in space?

Artemis 3 in 2025

It might seem like we already know everything there is to know about space, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. There is still so much to learn, and in 2025, NASA is launching another project—called Artemis—to do even more research on the moon, space technology, and preparing to send humans to Mars. The coolest part? The goal of Project Artemis will be to send the first woman to the moon.
